Trends in eLearning Technology

The pace of change in the deployment of technologies is such that it is near impossible to keep abreast of developments in practice. This module is designed to help participants to engage with emerging technologies at both theoretical and practical levels.

Aim: This module aims to provide an awareness of emerging trends in pedagogically-driven technologies and practical guidance on how to evaluate and implement these technologies in teaching and learning and professional eLearning practice.

What will I learn? On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

  • Identify emerging technologies relevant to the field of learning and teaching.
  • Engage with new technologies on a practical level.
  • Evaluate the pedagogical benefits of new technologies.
  • Identify issues relating to the maximisation of potential benefits of new technologies.

How will I learn? This module will utilise the blended delivery approach. Face-to-face workshops will introduce core concepts which are then developed further through online support materials (course content, readings, simulations, games, case studies, reflective journals, social networking software etc.) and both synchronous and asynchronous discussions. Practical experience will be encouraged through supporting lab-based workshops.

What will I learn? By its very nature, the content of this module will necessarily be quite fluid, reflecting the speed of change in the technological world. In its first iteration it will include such technologies as those embraced by:

  • Web logs (blogs)
  • Communal knowledge software (e.g. wikis)
  • Social networking software (e.g. Bebo)
  • Games / virtual environments (e.g. Second Life)
  • Mobile learning (m-learning)
  • Personal broadcasting (e.g. YouTube)

How will I be assessed? Participants will create a 3-minute pre-recorded presentation on a chosen or assigned topic which is peer-evaluated before final assessment. they will also note their reflections on each week and compile an annotated bibliography of reading completed during the module.
Participants who are taking this module as an option within the MSc in Applied eLearning will include this presentation, reflections and bibliography in their ePortfolio.

 

Are there any pre-requisites? No specific pre-requisites but an interest in technology and it’s use to support learning is assumed.
